A Home for Brooklyn Ballet

A Home for Brooklyn Ballet

Schermerhorn HouseBrooklyn Ballet’s incredible results and progress would simply not be possible without the enthusiastic and generous support of people and businesses in our community. Over 1,000 children annually are introduced to classical ballet through our “Elevate” in-school dance program, and so far six “Elevate” graduates have received scholarships to Summer Intensives at prestigious dance institutions such as The Joffrey, American Ballet Theater, Manhattan Youth Ballet, and Bolshoi’s Summer Academy. Now, with our new studio in Schermerhorn House, we're able to give Brooklyn’s children a ‘dance home’ in their own community where they can receive the conservatory-level training fundamental for a professional career in dance.

“It makes me feel like I can do anything when I’m up there.” – John Michael, student of Brooklyn Ballet School

“The thing I really love about dancing with Brooklyn Ballet is that it’s really calming—it calms me down when I get angry.” – Brianna, student of Brooklyn Ballet School

A breakthrough opportunity

Schermerhorn House, a Home for Brooklyn BalletThis year we created a home for Brooklyn Ballet in a splendid new residential development called Schermerhorn House. The location is perfect—160 Schermerhorn Street, in a large storefront in downtown Brooklyn, readily accessible to students and audience members throughout Brooklyn. The space also boasts a 200-seat black box theater, making it possible for Brooklyn Ballet’s professional Company to continue creating and performing new repertory. With your support, we've built a ballet home for our community, our children and our audiences.  But our work is not done.  The school community depends on us to continue scholarship support for talented students, expand our pre-professional program, and provide in-school residencies for Brooklyn public school children who might otherwise lose their arts education to Department of Education budget cuts.  Your support shows that the arts are vital to the life of our borough and that all Brooklyn children deserve equal access to them.

How you can help

The Borough President’s Office and Council Member David Yassky allocated capital costs for the development of our new studio, but we will need to raise an additional $120,000 by the end of December 2009.
