Level Placement

Students are initially placed in a class based on their age, prior dance experience and teacher observance or during placement auditions. Brooklyn Ballet’s levels do not necessarily match other dance schools in the area. As children progress physically at different rates, it is not uncommon to have children of different ages in different levels. This is especially true for those who dance more frequently. It is not uncommon for a student to remain in a level for more than one year. After one month of observing the student, this placement may be adjusted. Brooklyn Ballet staff and faculty welcome discussion with parents/guardians regarding a student’s placement and progress.

Faculty and Brooklyn Ballet staff will evaluate students at the close of each semester. Advancement in levels will be the decision of the faculty and staff, based upon the dancer’s ability to be successful in the next class level.

Attendance

  • Students are required to arrive at least 5-10 minutes prior to the start of class.
  • Regular attendance at class is necessary in order to maintain progress.
  • Parents and students should notify the teacher of any foreseen absences.
  • If excessive absences occur, teachers reserve the right to not allow a child to perform in the Student Showcase.

Tardiness

  • Students will not be allowed in class if more than 10 minutes late.
  • For children under the age of 7: If students arrive within 10 minutes of the start of class, the parent and student must wait at the “door” to the studio until the teacher gives permission to enter.

Make-up Classes

  • Make-up classes are only allowed in case of illness, and only three make-ups per semester are allowed. Make-up classes are only Monday through Friday, no weekends.
  • No make-up classes during March 15th through May 22nd.
  • A student may make up a class by attending an additional lower or equal level class.
  • Students are required to schedule their make-up classes by calling the Brooklyn Ballet office.
