Brooklyn Ballet hosts first International Summer Intensive featuring Cuban Ballet Master Joaquin Banegas

Brooklyn Ballet is thrilled to host its first International Summer Intensive July 5 through July 23 in the company’s newly inaugurated studio space at The Schermerhorn and at St. Francis College in downtown Brooklyn. The intensive will be the first ballet workshop of its kind in the New York area. The featured instructor is Cuban Ballet Master Joaquin Banegas, and the workshop includes Technique, Pointe, Variations, Choreography and Yoga.

Brooklyn Ballet Elevates Dance Education in Public Schools

In January, Brooklyn Ballet offered a series of free performances for students in Brooklyn public schools, marking the beginning of a residency program called Elevate that introduces children to the discipline and art of ballet with six to twelve weeks of free, in-school training with professional dancers.

Valerie Block writes about New York Arts groups’ ambitious plans. “The Brooklyn Academy of Music isn’t the only arts group embarking on ambitious expansion plans… Over at 160 Schermerhorn Street the Brooklyn Ballet this month will start building a 2,000-square-foot theater, where it will stage performances and offer classes. “Lords of the Dance,” an article by Joe Dziemianowicz of the Daily News published November 16, attributes a new respect for boys in ballet to Rahm Emanuel, as well as the hugely successful Billy Elliot musical. The article interviews several boy dancers from Billy Elliot as well as students from top ballet schools, including Naazir and Shaakir Muhammad from Brooklyn Ballet.
